"Katherine has an intensely engaging style whereby she facilitates a more meaningful learning experience than is the norm. She has the rare gift of providing subtle structure at the same time as eliciting exploration of ideas and content at deeper levels."

Katherine Long

Independent Associate Coach

Katherine is a 121 and team coach, coach supervisor, facilitator and organisation development practitioner. Coming from a background in supporting cross cultural communications for international companies and mergers, she enables organisations to broaden their perspectives and explore the bigger picture. Core areas of specialism include leadership and team development, culture change, supporting organisations on pathways of decolonisation, regeneration and sustainability, and navigating uncertain futures.

Katherine thrives in working in contexts of uncertainty, as it provides the catalytic spark for new ideas and ways of being to flourish. The nature and scale of challenges we are facing as humanity requires leaders who can step into their courage and compassion, building communities of change-makers that operate with the awareness of ‘We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children’.

Katherine includes creative design techniques, embodiment and systems mapping as well as appreciative inquiry (tapping into the green shoots of possibility) to support leaders and organisations navigate their own pathways through complexity. Working with a diverse range of public and private sectors including education and HE, healthcare, construction, B-Corps organisations, conservation charities, local government, law firms she helps facilitate memorable events for teams and whole organisations that result in tangible shifts for clients.

Katherine supports leaders to:

  • Understand the core values and preferences, and how they can use this to enhance and mature their practice and impact

  • Optimise the potential of their networks, partnerships and allies as key enablers to developing strategy, as well as facilitating change and transformation

  • Explore and apply regenerative and living systems principles in leadership and business

  • Enhance their capabilities around creativity and innovation

  • Develop personal and organisational resilience.

In addition, Katherine works, when appropriate, with workplace-based trauma that can impact confidence in public speaking, dealing with conflict, of fulfilling potential. She also offers mediation and dialogue spaces to address stuck aspects of past and present within organisations and teams.

Background

Katherine has a wide range of experience in working alongside global organisations as a communications trainer, coach and organisation development specialist.

Starting her career in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) in Japan (where she was born and grew up), she then took on the role of Director of Studies at Linguarama Torino and then Stratford-upon-Avon, where she specialised in technical business communication and cross-cultural training for clients such as KPMG, Ernst and Young, Honda, Rolls Royce, Deustche Post, London Stock Exchange, Arup, HSBC.

After that Katherine moved into coach training and coaching culture development, working for OCM, a leading coaching qualifications provider set up by one of the co-founders of EMCC (European Coaching and Mentoring Council) as Director of Development and Supervision, designing and delivering accredited coaching and coach supervision programmes on behalf of OCM and for CIPD, and designed the first EMCC accredited supervision qualification aimed at internal coach supervisors as part of supporting sustainable coaching culture in organisations such as Ernst and Young, B Braun, O2, RWE nPower, Oxfam.

Following several years of being a lead faculty member for the Masters in Coaching at University of Warwick she moved back into independent coaching and organisation development practice full time. Recent projects have included ‘Leading with Hope’ during the COVID years for NHS SW Leadership Academy, ‘Crossing the Threshold’ whole organisation transformation at Croydon Borough Council, supporting B-Lab organisation Vivobarefoot to develop its own cultural and coaching model incorporating regenerative and barefoot running principles, sustainability leadership to future leaders at Laing O’Rourke, whole departmental support to BCU marketing and comms team, designing a cultural framework with marine plastics charity Common Seas.

Client testimonials
"In my 30 years of corporate life, including 15 years in senior HR roles, I've had mixed experiences of the coaching profession. A few of the coaches I encoutered were outstanding, a few, quite frankly, terrible, but the vast majority were decidedly mediocre. I was therefore extremely fortunate to close out the corporate chapter of my life and open a fresh clean page with Katherine's wise and expert support. I think the essence of outstanding coach, beyond of course complete mastery of the fundamental skills and knowledge, is to be able to provoke and steer a dialogue that is both broad and deep, focused and limitless, uncomfortable and secure, fresh and familiar, experimental and structured, and finally reflective and action-oriented. If this was not challenging enough, a great coach keeps the dialogue rooted in the needs of the coachee and is prepared to push themself well beyond their own comfort zone to enable progress. My sense is that given the scale of the challenge it is not at all surprising that many individuals who coach never succeed in real mastery. It was therefore my privilege to work with Katherine who did all of the above, and more, and in doing so led me to an appreciation of the profession that I never previously had."
